Theft Prevention

Always lock your bike! Don't ever walk away from an unlocked bicycle without keeping an eye on it at all times, not even for a second. It only takes a moment for a thief to swoop in when an individual has ducked into a store or is using a public bathroom at a park. Bike thefts are a "crime of opportunity." Don't give them one.

Recommended bicycle locks: Buy the most expensive lock you can afford. U-locks are strong and better ones come with theft warranties. Only buy a U-lock with a flat or disc key. Cylindrical keyed locks are more easily picked. Criminals target bicycles that are secured with chain or cable locks because they are easy to defeat.

Lock to a bike rack that is firmly affixed (bolts covered in concrete); these are the most secure. Criminals target bicycles that are free standing and/or locked to themselves. If there are no spaces at the rack closest to your location, you must relocate. Bicycles are like cars, if there are not enough spaces you must drive to the next parking facility.

Report any suspicious activity to UCR Police Department at 911 (emergencies) or (951) 827-5222. (non-emergencies).

If you believe that your bike has been stolen, you should contact the UCR Police Department at (951) 827-5222.

If you happen to witness a bike theft, either by force or stealth, dial 911 immediately and inform the dispatcher where you are and what is happening. Try to remember as much as you can about the suspect for police reports.

If you suspect that someone has stolen your bike, do not directly confront them because an incident may occur. Contact UCR Police Department and give them as much information as possible. You can never be entirely sure that a suspect has stolen your bike because many bikes look the same and many people have the same bike.

And remember, if you lock your bike tightly and securely with a U-lock, your chances of being the victim of a bike theft will be substantially lower.
